Ideas on business – Web promotion, etc. for RKBS Consultancy?

Hi guys, we have launched a website www.rkbsconsultancy.com – the team of which will provide consultancy in Engineering, Real Estate, Finance, Sales and Marketing, Travel and Software Development fields. The company is based in New Delhi, India. The core team is very qualified and capable of executing any project of any scale. The core team has six people with collective experience of around 100 years in their respective fields – with a few retired people who are willing to work more and that is why this website. Are there forums or mailing lists for sharing my new software program?

I’d like to find a forum or mailing list on the Internet where I can share my brand new software product and, more importantly to me, start getting feedback on it. People who are dedicated to discovering new and interesting software products. Everywhere I go that could even be potentially related, I see “no self-promotion” signs plastered everywhere. How are people supposed to discover software if people with software can’t announce software and get feedback? It is a Catch-22. This makes it incredibly difficult to get the word out AND get feedback. The software I’ve written is open source and web-based. I’ve tried the press release thing – but that is a one way street and doesn’t work well.

Brian Anderson answers:

First off, you’re gonna have to identify your software market. There’s no point, for instance, in promoting a graphics-based app in a spreadsheet-orientated group. Sounds straightforward and easy, but it’s amazing how many software authors make that fundamental mistake.

Once you have identified a group which could benefit from your product, don’t immediately jump in with a promo ad and then be surprised when you get booted from on-high. This is very much a case of “softly softly, catchee monkey”…… In other words, hang around the group for a few weeks/months, answer a few queries, offer help etc. Let the membership see that you’re not just there to spam them. Trust me, the more folks get to know the way you work/the way you think, the more receptive they will be when/if you then decide to offer your program for their approval/feedback.

The only sites I know of which DO offer this type of service are all subscription-only–and that subscription often costs (BIG time). For the normal, run of the mill membership, they will be on particular lists for specific reasons–whether that be learning a software app, registering for freebies from specific authors (who they already know and trust) etc etc. To break into this market, you’re gonna have to earn their trust. The upside to this is that once you HAVE that trust, they’ll follow you to he@@ and back, because they see you as one of them, rather than simply a vendor.
