Similarity in Interest

There is rarely a point to leave a comment on blogs that have nothing at all to do with the main theme of your blog. A direct connection is unnecessary but preferable. A dance blog and a food blog may not have anything in common at first glance, but if you look more closely, you’ll realize that both of them may target the same age group. Two different blogs may also have target the same geographical area.

If you can find a major connection between both your target markets, beneficial comment exchange is very much possible but only with careful planning. First, you’ll need to think of a topic that could link your interests together. Just concentrate on your target market, and you’re sure to find one.

If we go back to the food and dance blog example and assume that both are targeting teenagers, articles that could require the blog owners to exchange comments would be about the best food for dancers during competition and the best dance workouts for those on a diet.

Of course, it’s not bad at all to leave a comment on someone else’s blog just because you want to. If you have the time and the inclination then go ahead! There may be no way for you to benefit from such an action now but this small act of generosity and goodwill could turn out good for you in the long run.

Now, as you might expect, Google and Bing are far from telling anyone – including Danny Sullivan – exactly how their search algorithms work, let alone how those algorithms treat social media activity. They are, however, forthcoming about some things.

For example, Google and Bing say they attach more or less ‘authority’ to the links you Tweet on Twitter based on the level of authority YOU have on Twitter. They assess your ‘Twitter authority’ according to such factors as your following-to-followers ratio (the lower this is the better).

On the other hand, Bing doesn’t try to assess your level of authority on Facebook and Google says it does so in a limited way.

In relation to links posted on Twitter, both Google and Bing take into account how often a link is Tweeted or Retweeted, in addition to the Twitter authority of those sharing such links.

Bing applies a similar approach to links shared on Facebook, i.e. links viewable by ‘Everyone’ on Facebook users’ Walls and Fan Pages. Google similarly weights links on Fan Pages but doesn’t have access to people’s Facebook Wall data.

So what’s the bottom line for Internet marketers? Basically, all things being equal, you will increase your search engine rankings by:

1. Increasing or maintaining a high level of authority on Twitter; and
2. Getting other high Twitter authority users to Tweet and/or Retweet links to your website(s).

In this area you have the liberty to do as much selling as you want unlike the content of the article where you have to be more subtle, but you have to keep it five to seven lines long. In the resource box you can tell your name, say some word of what you are selling and invite people to visit your webpage.

An article should be between 500 to 1200 words. It can be too short and not to long because publishers won’t publish it and people won’t read it. You should write it in a simple language that everybody can understand, and try writing it like you speak and address your reader at a personal level.

Here is a great tip, try titles like ” Five ways to improve you looks”, write of the first 3 ones in your article and for the other 2 of them invite the reader to follow the link to your page.

Another good trick is to write articles in multiple parts. Ezine publishers love that kind of article and they make people keep looking for what you are writing.
