For most people currently of a working age, telemarketing will have always been around during their lifetimes, but the advertising technique is actually relatively youthful compared to other approaches.
Marketing of a very primitive kind has been around since Ancient Rome, Greece and Egypt, but companies have gradually been able to increase the guns in their arsenal with the advent of new technology. Once the telephone became ubiquitous in the 20th century, it was only a matter of time before salesmen realised the potential for consumer telemarketing and business-to-business telemarketing.
